Sunday: Titanic, First Class Corridor

This is a first class corridor on the Titanic.

K and I met up with Pam this morning (Joy being away on a business trip). We headed down to Richmond for some excellent dim sum. From there, we went to the Titanic artefact exhibition.

It’s an exhibition that’s travelled round the world and is in Richmond until January. All the exhibits are items from the Titanic which have been brought up from the seabed. The narrative of the ship is then woven around that. It’s so odd to see spoons that people ate from, contents of suitcases, a nightshirt someone wore, all remarkably preserved.

One of the most interesting parts was that our tickets were images of boarding cards issued in the names of actual passengers. At the end of the exhibition you found out whether the person whose name was on your card survived or not.

We were all carrying the names of female passengers. K. was in second class. Pam and I were third class. Pam’s person was the only one who survived, the woman on my card perished along with her two year old.

It’s fascinating how the Titanic still holds sway in our minds.
