What a great day - up at the crack to pick up the Cap'n and birl him down to the boat. He cast his experienced eye over my boom and together we hatched a plan for a reefing system without radical surgery. So, it was off to the chandlers at Granton to get a bag of ironmongery together. A fine job in prospect, for a warmer day.
After that it was down the town to make a start on the Christmas shopping, which was reasonably successful. I was tempted to buy everyone a piece of art from the Open Eye, but I'm sure socks and hankies will be more useful.
Later the Cap'n was back in touch - he'd obviously been thinking about my next job - sorting out the main halyard. Here's his missive (or massive SMS actually) for you all to enjoy - Pip pip!

the more i ponder, the more i'm convinced that the t/lift and main h/d must have gone down from the masthead inside the mast, exiting through slots in the mast wall (about shoulder height from the deck) thence to stand up blocks at decklevel. are you certain these apertures don't exist? - if they don't they're easy to do + mousing the mast is pretty straightforward when you've already got two cables in-situ. i can't see any other reason for having the two sheave blocks enclosed within the head of the mast, except to accommodate the arrangement i've described. the genny h/d could use the second block and the t/lift could remain as is.
