In the 60s a local Blackheath engineer began constructing unique metal pipe playground equipment.

These one-off pieces, which are quaint and charming, were installed in the pool park after being paraded in the annual Rhododendron Festival.
The engineer, Dick West, also supplied councils across the country.
The equipment was removed due to concerns over safety, but some pieces were modified and returned to the park in 2001.
Sadly, his most famous piece, the 'Blackheath Rocket', was deemed too dangerous to be installed.
Just as well I and other parents weren't aware of this as our children clambered all over it:)
