Open Mic Friday

We have shared music all too infrequently this school year, and that's not a good thing. This young lady, Alessia, told me earlier this year that she wanted to work up the nerve to sing before the whole class. I asked her if I could accompany her on guitar, and she said she liked that idea. I finally suggested Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom", and we practiced all of 15 minutes before singing it. The class loved her singing, and I love seeing kids do this. Yet one more thing I'll miss next year.

Far between sundown's finish and midnight's broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
And for each and every underdog soldier in the night
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
