Most UK towns that were bombed in WW2 were reconstructed as concrete monstrosities, now being haphazardly rebuilt again, with mixed success. Pretty much 'buy cheap, buy twice...'

Rotterdam, despite being similarly flattened and also being Europe's biggest port, just looks great from almost every angle.
