Red squirrel

Today's the day …………………. to observe

Rob Asbridge and the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group have done a wonderful job in this area.

After two and a half years of discussion with Forestry Commission Scotland, the work at the Barrhill Community Woodland is complete.  There is now almost a kilometre of new and resurfaced paths, providing all ability access to the woods.  There's a smart wooden 6m x 4m, open plan, Community Base which is available to all local community groups when using the woodland for events or for meetings.  But best of all, there's a special hide - open daily from 8am - from which to quietly observe all the wildlife of the wood - free to use for both the local community and tourists alike.  That's where I went today.

I had it all to myself too and it was absolutely magical.  Before long I had the company of at least a dozen red squirrels, mischievously playing with one another and taking advantage of the food and water on offer.  But not only squirrels, there were lots of wild birds including the one in extra.

It was such a joy - and privilege - to be there …………………….
