"Fire Department Connections" and Diane Arbus

I was on far West 23rd Street in Manhattan,  returning in late afternoon from an exhibition of Diane Arbus's Untitled series--66 photographs of residents of homes for people with developmental disabilities; Arbus took them in the last years of her life, in 1969-71 (she committed suicide in July 1971). The images are strikingly direct, unsubtle portraits of the persons in the facilities. The full series has never been exhibited before, and I was glad to have the chance to see them (I find it difficult to say more about my feelings).  The New York Times review of the show is here; if you wish to see more of the images they're here.

We had returned at midday to the city by train from our Thanksgiving in New Jersey.
