SPYATRI LOWP OOT
This display is on the road out of Aspatria on the way to Maryport. I have been meaning to stop for a blip for a wee while, but got around to it today. I think that in the summertime there will be flowers growing beside the milk churns. When I got home tonight, I googled the phrase to discover that in the 1800’s when the Maryport and Carlisle Railway terminated at Aspatria, the port would very politely show out the first class passengers, but when it came to the third class carriage, he would open the door and shout “Spyartri lowp oot”.
Spyatri (pronounced Speeatry) is the local name for Aspatria.
