Lydia, the amazing Arachnida

The big brown blobby out-of-focus thing is about 6 feet away from the green stick.  Suspended between the two is a fine thread spun by Lydia, the amazing Arachnida (aka Spiderwoman).  

The thread does not touch the ground at any point.  How did she do it?  

(This is a rhetorical question by the way - please don't tell me and spoil the magic.)
