Cold War Kids
Today the Bicester Camera Club had an outing to the former RAF Upper Heyford, which was operated by the USAF from the very early fifties. The site was vacated in 1994 and much of the domestic side has been demolished, but a good number of the military / tactical buildings have been listed and will be maintained.
It was very interesting tour, lead by a former USAF member who worked on the security side of the base. He showed us a lot of interesting aspects to the site, inside one of the hardened aircraft shelters, the bomb store and the extremely hardened bunker that held the nuclear triggers for the bombs they cannot confirm or deny were held there....! Finally was the command and control centre with it's operations room.
The main photo is of the business end of the jet engine test cell with it's cooling shower for the jet exhaust.
There are a few extras of the HAS, trigger room, and command room, and a lot more here on Flickr
