Rough Castle Fort
Out this morning walking with a group of women friends. We started at the Falkirk Wheel and walked to Rough Castle and on to Bonnybridge. Picked up the canal and back to the wheel for lunch at the café. Very satisfactory walk and a great chance to catch up with people some of whom I've not seen for ages.
Rough Castle was one of 16 known forts along the Antonine Wall, which was built across Scotland’s central belt from AD/CE 140. The wall formed the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire. Although no buildings survive at Rough Castle it is easy to see the outline of the fort, the remains of the wall itself and the impressive ditches. The trees now growing on and around the wall were looking good in the sunshine. Lots of steps and fresh air and I'm sleepy now.
