A life cut short

100 years ago today my husband's grandfather died in the Spanish 'flu epidemic leaving a 3 year old son.  His widow had never worked because she had been brought up by an aunt following the death of both her parents within months of each other..  She stayed at home to help look after her younger siblings (the youngest was a baby).
After he died she did a heavy manual job in a dairy.
Her husband had not fought in the war but he was still a victim.
