A view from Jeanneb

End of the rainbow

A quick trip to Guisely this morning for an M&S stock up shop to use some of my Sparks offers.

On the way back we could see a rainbow. It was bright and breezy but with quite a bit of cloud around and obviously some showers. I took a couple of shots through the windscreen but they weren't very good. We stopped on the road up to Hawksworth and, although the colours had intensified, the rainbow was much less complete. I went with this shot any way as it was also showing a good view of the former Highroyds Hospital.
This Victorian edifice was a mental institution or Sanitorium
Sad to say in my youth people would quip that someone should be sent to Menston or belonged in Menston. (Menston being the name of the village where the hospital is located)
It's good that such places are now closed and we have a much greater understanding of mental illness today. It is rumoured that unmarried mothers were locked up there and people often lived as inmates for many years.

The old building is now, apartments and new housing has been built around it. Not sure I would want to live there.
