Hunger

As I was leaving the UN building after a meeting today, this group was just assembling. They began to chant and wave their flags, holding up posters bearing the faces of Palestinian prisoners who are currently on hunger strike.

Ayman Sharawna, Samer al-Issawi and Oday Keilani have each been held in administrative detention for prolonged periods without charge. Ayman and Samer were both released in the prisoner exchange deal in 2011, but were arrested and detained again within months of their release.

These men are refusing food in an effort to exert some control over their lives, where most control has been stripped from them. Their health is quickly deteriorating.
