Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The RooDeKanga

As we come to the end of the commemoration of the Great War it is fitting to think of the casualties  of all the nations involved. Today I have broken the rules of Blipfoto by combining and posting two images from previous travels, one from Australia and one from France.
These signs come from the French town of Peronne which was captured by Australian troops of the 14th and 15th Brigades on 2 September 1918. Within days of the capture of Peronne a number of signs with Australian themed names appeared on the streets painted on bits of old ammunition boxes.  These included Wallaby Lane, Wombat Road, Ding Bat Alley, Digger Road, Dinkum Alley and the Roo De Kanga. The original was sent back to Australia and is now in the National War Museum in Canberra, where I photographed it. The modern street name was erected in 1998 to commemorate the liberation of the town.
I first came across the street sign when I was researching the life of Captain Russell Blake MC, a most remarkable young Australian. You can read about him in an earlier blip.
