TREAT for Baby Trees
However, it is in the day to day promotion that the community is making a huge difference. ‘Plant native instead of exotic!’ is their watchword and with their advice, enthusiasm and saplings available, hundreds of large gardens and roadsides are being re-wilded.
This is a huge undertaking, not least producing and keeping a supply of the huge number of species readily available for planting.
Seeds and fruit are constantly being collected from the area. Many of the seeds are very tricky to germinate and there have been many trials to find ways to make them grow successfully. Some need to be boiled, some baked, some only sprout if they are covered, some only uncovered, some need burning, one will only take if it has been fermented for precisely 3 days.
The Cassowary, having evolved a symbiotic relationship with the forest, is the germination specialist as seed passing through its gut gets the necessary maceration, enzymes, bacteria and acid to penetrate tough casings, and when ejected a nice heap of manure to keep the little plant warm and fertilised. However, the Cassowary needs at least 20 acres of forest to survive and even with TREAT’s efforts, this is hard to come by!
