This was quite a feat of engineering. Building anything so near the seafront (yards away) means digging a very big hole, pouring in concrete and setting the supports in firmly. This is made more complicated by not being able to attach anything at all to the Martello tower building, as it's listed. Hence the bridge has to be stand-alone.
