At last!

After many years and lots of money the Ely Southern Bypass opened this week. As a result this level crossing is now permanently closed - it used to cause major tailbacks because it was closed for as much 45 minutes in the hour at times. The underpass is also closed for about 3months for improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. It is notorious, and believed to be the most struck rail bridge in the country due to the apparent total inability for some drivers to see the signs saying headroom only 9ft (2.7m), and trying to go through with vans, caravans, motorhomes etc.  The bypass presented challenges in construction as it had to cross over the river and the railway and the ground is soft fen soil.
