I think! Growing on birch, very hard outer skin and stripy grooves.
Apparently it's a 'cure all' in Russian traditional medicine. It's known to have broad anti-microbial properties and has been tested as a fix for MRSA.
People boil it up and drink it as tea here, supposedly effective treatment for people with Lyme disease.
