There've been lots of these around recently. I spent five minutes crouching beside one of those boxes with the wires which tell traffic lights what to do in Stockbridge on Saturday afternoon poking at one, ignored another on Haymarket Terrace a little later and ignored two on Lauriston Place earlier this week. Oddly, all were encountered during very nice lighting conditions which is why I probably ignored most of them as it would have left me with too many things to process at the end of the day. Whilst biodegradeable they're still litter (and the biological process which take care of them are probably seagulls or pigeons or possibly rats) so I usually wait for a bin to turn up if I find myself holding an apple core in an urban area.
A reasonably successful work-day despite being oppressed by snot with the general unportable and unclean feeling a mucus-filled snout lends the rest of the body. Things which are normally unpleasant but tolerable such as the reek of nearby over-perfumed people and fag-stench from the coats of chuffers irritate the nostrils mightily and make you want to throw snotty tissues at the perpetrators. Despite it being slightly difficult to breathe in a publicly-acceptable manner it's definitely better taking the stairs during such times as these to lessen the chance of exposure to a liftful of the over-scented.
