Brick and Wood

I'm not exactly sure what this wooden block is for that's in this wall. I’m guessing that it's used as an anchor point for the wooden panel to the left.  I like the grain and the colours in the block and the fact it's too small for the hole.  The covering of cobwebs give it the aged grungy look that so often seems to attract my attention.
