Tongland

Today's the day …………………….. for days gone by

This is the view from the other side of the Telford Bridge over the River Dee at Tongland, looking towards the town of Kirkcudbright.  The river is still tidal at this point and at one time Tongland was a small port with its own harbour.

Imports to the harbour played an important part in improving the productivity of the surrounding farmland.  In the 1790s, farmers cultivated their land with lime from England and sea-shells from local coasts.  The lime imported to the Port of Tongland had a great effect on the fertility of the land.  And in their turn, grain, potatoes, timber and salmon caught in the famous Dee fisheries were exported from the port.

Today, instead of a busy port, you are more likely to see groups of teal, mute swans and perhaps a golden eye or cormorant diving for fish in the turbulent water where the River Dee and Tarff Water meet...………………...
