The Hospital for Sick Turtles
At Townsville Aquarium they have a hospital for sick turtles. This Green Sea turtle Chelonia mydas is a female of about 30 years old and was brought in suffering from impaction of the gut. Air builds up behind the blockage and makes them swim lopsidedly as well as being agonising. The treatment is to give laxatives or an enema and hope everything moves along. In the tank there is a length of plastic piping for her to roll her underside against to alleviate the stomach pain. Ingestion of plastic kills thousands every year. However, in this case it was of natural origin. Whilst enthusiastically pulling up sea grass or weed to eat she accidentally ate a large, round, perfectly intestine-shaped pebble, This lives in a jar above her tank to show visitors and remind her not to pebble pop again! Hopefully, when fully recovered she will be released back into the sea.
Incidentally, Green turtles are brown on the outside, as you can see, but eat so much green vegetable that their flesh is green.
