Staying indoors

It is a dark damp staying indoors day. I was a staying indoors sort of person even when I was young and I had my nose in a book when everyone else was out on their bike.
Once I had grown out of Enid Blyton I discovered Arthur Ransome. I saved up 7/6 for each book in turn, and when I got them home I covered them with brown paper to keep them nice for as long as possible. Then I would read them over and over again until I knew them by heart. Later, when I went on a Norfolk Broads holiday with the Youth Club (two boats, one for the girls and one for the boys!) I knew the map so well in my mind that we hardly needed a navigator. When later I went to the Lake District I was for ever trying to recognise Swallows and Amazons haunts. The books are tatty now, the next generation hadn't had to save up their pocket money for them, so they didn't cherish them in the same way!
