Big B orders Breakfast
The majority of the Agile Wallabies that come for much needed food and water are females with joeys. They spend the night grazing on the small patches of irrigated grass and then wait patiently at dawn for the yoghurt pot (large) full of mixed grain and special kangaroo pellets. At about 15.30 they are there again waiting for the evening feed below the house. There may be up to 10 at any one time, some with little ones in the pouch, shyly peeping out with just a bit of fluff starting to grow on their heads, some with nearly full grown joeys at foot.
Occasionally a male turns up, especially if a female is in heat. They are a third again the size of the females and woo by softly clicking their tongues as they follow her around. They respond by sniffing loudly in disdain but as is so common, eventually fall for a sweet-clicking guy.
Then there is Big B. This elderly patriarch is twice the size of the others, has a bad eye, and obviously thinks of the place as a retirement home with perks. Rachel primly says his nick-name is short for Big Boy, but Russell points out it is fascinating that his balls are suspended on a line like a yo-yo and can be hoisted up and down at will, depending on the outside temperature.
Big Boy is a great one for monitoring ‘customer care.’ If you are working on the veranda he hops up, his big nails clicking on the stones and gives you the ‘stare’. Not aggressive; polite, but quietly penetrating. He will stand there until the staff take note of his concerns. He is quite irresistible and his technique always inspires us to go the extra mile – Whinlatter customers take note!.
