Aka Musselburgh Lagoons is a restored piece of industrial land by the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh.

Waste ash from the Cockenzie Power Station (closed in 2013) in nearby Prestonpans was transported via pipes to the lagoons, which are located on the seaward side of Musselburgh Racecourse.

A large part of the 120-hectare ash lagoons has already been reclaimed, grassed and transferred to East Lothian Council ownership, providing a habitat for wildlife and birds, and work is ongoing to restore the last two lagoons.

They form part of the Firth of Forth Special Protection area and the one closest to the mouth of the River Esk has been designated as an internationally important Ramsar site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its value to wading birds. A couple of rare sightings this week include Richard’s Pipit and a Surf Scoter.

While it is possible to walk round some of the lagoons, many, because of their importance to birds aren’t accessible to the public, although, there are three hides which allow the public to bird watch.

A lovely place for a relaxing walk on a Saturday afternoon.

I hope you have had a good day too.
