Industrial Fenland

We think of the Fens as wide open farmland, but there is industry too. This is the Wissington Sugar Beet processing plant now in full flow until about February. Running 24/7 until all the beet is used the plumes of steam can be seen for miles - and the smell wafts a long way too! I pass this every time I go to Oxburgh. From  March to September the road is generally almost deserted but at this time of the year there are convoys of lorries bringing the beet, and returning empty - and the smell!
