"Hope is the Most Precious Treasure"
Today some colleagues and I had a chat with Rabbi Bonnie Koppell (she's so neat, check her out!) about fate and she gave us fortune cookies. This was my fortune.
During our chat about fate and destiny, we came upon the topic of the bashert, which is the Jewish version of your soul mate (You say it like "BAH-shayr-t"). Your bashert is perfect for you, you are destined for eachother and no one else, and when you find eachother, it could mean true happiness. Your bashert could be your next door nieghboor. Or maybe a famous movie star. Or even a bushman who lives in India! You may never even meet your bashert. Which would be a sad thing indeed.
A really romantic/angsty piece of me wants to think that I've already met my bashert, but lost him and we can never be together. Of course, this can never happen, because your bashert is like your other piece. You don't just lose your bashert. But all that talk of true happiness and destiny kind of made me long for my first real love, whom we will call Mr. H. He was really great, and I don't want to get into the messy details but it ended real bad. e e cummings once said, "love is more thicker than forget"--No matter how bad it ended, a tiny, tiny piece of me will always still love him. But not quite in a romantic way. I'll always care for him and hope he's doing okay though.
Then my thoughts turn to my current beau, who we'll call Mr. Boy. WOW! Mr. Boy is basically everything I never knew I needed. We were both going through something tough when we met eachother, and without eachother's support and love we never would have got to where we are now. Sometimes we talk about where we'll move to, or how we'd raise our kids, etc. Could Mr. Boy be my bashert? I certainly hope so! But, of course, only time can tell that.
Phew! That was very long! I appologize, and if you read it all, thanks! If not, just enjoy the picture, and have a wonderful night!
