Little Missenden Church, Buckinghamshire
Tonight on my birthday there was a wonderful concert at the Church of St John the Baptist at Little Missenden as part their annual music festival – the 59th. The Heath Quartet played some Bach Chorale Preludes, Tippett's Quartet #5, and my very favourite - Beethoven's A minor quartet Op. 132. It was wonderful.
The church dates from King Edgar’s reign as part of a mission he had to strengthen Christianity. The Saxon church was developed further 150 years later in the Norman period.
What makes the church so significant now are the wall paintings from the 12th to the 17th century, which are very rare, and were rediscovered by accident in 1931, during restoration work.
The first two blips are six paintings, which tell of St Catherine in six scenes, and then there is a Doom painting.
If you are ever in the area, it is really worth a visit.
