the sea

There’s something about the sea that draws me and frightens me simultaneously. I am drawn to its colour, its movement, its glint, its noise, its lack of predictability. I fear its depths, its strength, its reach, its secrets, its “otherness”.

In the beginning of all the creations stories, the sea is formed and represents chaos, disorder, fear. In the Christian text, one sign of heaven is that there is no sea… symbolising the absence of fear.

In many ways life ebbs and flows like the sea. It has power to give and take away. It can strengthen and destroy. Life is to be grasped, but one needs to pay attention to its script which is riddled with unpredictability.

We live in the white waters, the turbulence, so we must learn to surf the waves if we are to reach the safety of the shore.
