The Willow Man
(near Taunton, Somerset)
Willow man stands and wonders,
Where did the greenery go?
Where are the fields of cows and trees,
The friends I used to know?
My brain is shrinking in my head
When I gaze at so much brick,
While the motorway's constant racket
Grates my every stick.
The birds no longer nest in me,
Though there's room in my empty heart.
The willow man stands and wonders,
Lost in a world apart.
