William Smellie

This cast figure of mother and child is a striking memorial in Lanark to a pioneer of obstetrics William Smellie.

The current location behind bushes in the garden of the medical centre does not do it justice

Smellie was born at Lanark in 1597, he also died there in 1763

A maternity hospital in the town named after him closed some 30 years ago
