The Red Swellings...

Does anybody know what Tge Red Swellings was? Maybe Scarlet Fever?
I had a really good walk with a U3A group this morning and we came across this plaque on an abreveur. An abreveur is for watering animals but it was previously a well.
Rain threatened all morning but held off so after the walk I once again went fir a swim at the Ladies Pool. It was very choppy and I swallowed a few mouthfuls of water. It was certainly windy and 5ere was no way I could wrap my microfibre towel around me so I was really grateful I had the key to the changing rooms...
