Digging

Today the weather was warm and sunny - such a relief after yesterday’s cold, wet, day. I was really pleased to be able to spend several hours at my allotment. I measured out the plots and paths, as per the design I made yesterday. Then started to dig!

In this picture you can see in the foreground the fruit area, then the area covered by matting where the bench will go, and on from that the herb garden that I have started to dig. It is hard going as the soil is full of roots including those of bind weed which need to be carefully removed.

The people who have a neighbouring plot to mine were at their plot all day. They sat and had a picnic at lunchtime, then later relaxed with a beer whilst they sat looking at their hard work and future plans for their plot. They’re overrun with Swiss chard so have me a huge arm full of it!

My yoga teacher and his partner also popped over for a chat. They have just taken on a new plot so we were comparing notes on digging and thoughts on raised beds. They are hoping to use a no dig system but were doing some initial work to clear some soil so they can plant some garlic. I think I should try to plant some garlic too.
