Six VC's Before Breakfast
The husband has gone golfing to take part in the English Senior Finals. He was one of the Lancashire county team that won the Northern Counties competition so they are hoping to take it one step further this week!
I figured if I didn't go out this morning I'd sit indoors all day - where it was warm and comfy!
The Fusilier Museum in Bury has a new sculpture which I spent quite a lot of time at. I found it really moving as my great-grandfather was in the 2nd/8th battalion of the Lancashire Fusilier's and lost his leg in the First World War. I imagine he was stretchered off the battlefield.
The sculpture is of two soldiers, each wearing a poppy and on top of the stretcher, it says:
My friend you would not tell with such high zest,
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old lie: dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.
- Wilfred Owen, 18th March 1893 - 4th November 1918
The Latin translates as "it is sweet and right to die for your country".
The sculpture is in the Gallipoli Gardens and the etching in the bench "6 VC's before breakfast" refers to the gallantry displayed by the 1st Battalion of the Lancashire Fusilier's on the morning of 25th April 1915.
The successful capture of W Beach led to six Victoria Crosses being awarded. The battalion started the day with 27 officers and 1,002 other men but a headcount just 24 hours later revealed just 16 officers and 304 men.

I also really like the picture frame of poppies which I have added as my extra photo.
