That's Life!

Lunch, Contemplated . . .

To Eat, Or Not to Eat . . ? That's the all-consuming question for this off-duty worker at the St Jacob Farmers' Market, just outside Waterloo, Ontario.

The market is in the heart of a community of 4,000 Old Order Mennonites, notable for their disdain for motorised transport (they ride in ramshackle horse-drawn buggies), social services and state pensions - and their plain dress code.

According to Wikipedia, Plain to a Mennonite is the opposite of showy or ostentatious, and is considered a virtue. It is based on the belief that a person's true worth does not lie in their clothes or appearance . . ."

Can't argue with that, can we? Well, I can't (I'm never going to be voted best-dressed man in town, as Jools will sadly affirm), but I reckon many of the owners, or patrons, of the adjacent clothing stores and shopping malls will not share that ethos . . .
