The Canadian Caper
Went to see the new Ben Affleck film 'Argo' this afternoon and it was great. A tremendous cast including John Goodman, Alan Arkin, and Victor Garber as well as Ben.
Though I remember the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979, as I was only a kid I don't remember it in much detail, so it was good to get a better feeling of what happened. I suppose seeing it on Thanksgiving day, is a bit ironic as it is a hard piece of history for Americans, though thankfully the 6 'Canadian' hostages (as shown in this film) as well as the other hostages were saved.
The "Canadian Caper" (which is the basis of 'Argo') was the popular name given to the joint covert rescue by the Government of Canada and the Central Intelligence Agency (led by Tony Mendez, a CIA operative) of six American diplomats who evaded capture during the seizure of the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran and taking of embassy personnel as hostages by Islamist students and militants on November 4, 1979.
Happy Thanksgiving Day to all.
