Robin's Pincushion or Mossy Rose Gall

These peculiar growths are found on the stems of Dog Roses and begin life as a light green mossy growth that turns red and then brown in the autumn and winter.  They are home to to the larvae of a tiny wasp.  It is formed by the bush in reaction to insect-released chemicals and each one holds many tiny grubs that emerge as adults in the spring.
