I'd been wondering about performing a nice preventative rear shifter cable replacement ahead of winter, when the build-up of autumnal leaf-gunk and the increased viscosity of cold weather interact badly. This evening required an emergency brake cable replacement after I crawled gently home after the front brake cable snapped at the lever during one of the several bus-mistrusting sudden slowdowns required when attempting to get home along Princes Street. I managed to find the stepped ferrules cited as a necessary accessory to the levers by the website I bought the levers from but still couldn't find a way of getting them to fit, so just used one of the salvaged Bike Station stops instead.
