Four years before the mast me hearties!

Fighting the high seas, it's John at the wheel of the SS Great Britain in its dry dock in Bristol's floating Harbour. B in L spent 4 years in the merchant navy in lieu of National Service mainly in US ex war effort ships and obviously enjoyed every minute in an era when ships docked and crew had shore leave. Say no more!
