Breakfast on the Balcony
So after a 24 hour flight and 14 hour sleep what could be better than breakfast with a view!
One of the best things about Cairns is that despite the developers’ stringent efforts the forest and its inhabitants haven’t moved out yet. The hills of the Great Dividing Range behind come close to the coast here to catch the warm Pacific air, although it is not raining hard yet. The town itself is very low lying so these gardens back onto waterways and waterways flow into tidal estuaries. The trees and vegetables that people grow in their gardens is a huge mix of plants from tropical areas all over the world - bananas, coconuts, mangoes - which provide lots of fruit and flowers for birds and bats particularly. Last night the moon was full and at dusk bats with meter wingspans drifted out from their roosts to swirl around the street lights before finding fruit and this morning parrots and friar birds are squeaking with joy at the thought of pollen and nectar for breakfast. I am quite happy with golden kiwi and pineapple too.
