Hebden Bridge

Once you have negotiated the rather terrifying ‘Tuel Lane Lock’ with its intimidating nineteen feet fall – the combined depth of the original locks 3 and 4 which were merged when the canal was restored – the Rochdale Canal settles down to meander its way through some very picturesque countryside to the small town of Hebden Bridge.
Hebden Bridge was and still is famous for the production of corduroy. It was once known as ‘trouser town’ apparently. Packhorses took the cloth from the mills to the canal and from there to Sowerby Bridge and on. Many of the old mills still stand, but most are converted into studios and workshops.
I bought myself a very nice pair of earrings from a jewellery and glass-making shop .....................
