DawestotheHague

Morning over Abrikozenstraat!

I have found myself living on Abrikozenstraat (Apricot Street) in the Vruchtenbuurt (Fruit Neighbourhood) district. I am surrounded by Perenstraat (Pear Street), Appelstraat (Appel Street - didn't even need Google Translate for that one!), Frambozenstraat (Raspberry Street), Tomatenstraat and Sinaasappelstraat (Orange Street), among MANY other fruity names!

I snapped the view out of my back window this morning as the sunrise really was lovely and the contrast to Monday morning's foggy foggy outlook was stark!

Someone has taken a lot of care in naming the streets of the Hague. Another example is Statenkwartier (States Quarter), where I work and which is the home of the ICTY, the ICTR and many of the embassies. A wander down President Kennedylaan (and on to Johan de Wittlaan*) or down Eisenhowerlaan will bring you to Churchillplein. Churchillplein is home to the World Forum and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (which also contains the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda).

*Johan de Witt, according to Wikipedia, was an influential Dutch politician in the mid-17th century a flourishing time in the country's sea trade. (There is also a district called Zeeheldenkwartier (Sea Heroes Quarter), giving an idea of the importance placed on naval heroes!)
