Covered bridge

Pennsylavania has dozens of old covered bridges. The covers were originally intended to protect the wooden supports of the bridges from the weather; they also provided shelter from rain for travellers and their horses. This is probably still an important use, as this is Amish country and lots of people travel in horse-drawn buggies.
