Calanques

Today we went to one of Gordon’s favourite places and went on a trip that he really likes.

Cassis is not far from Marseille and is set in a dramatic position, at the foot of a huge rocky outcrop. It is in essence a charming little fishing port, but is very popular as a tourist destination. Parking can be a problem, but we got there early and it was easy.

After a coffee sitting by the Vieux Port, we bought tickets for the next sailing to the Calanques, the massive white rocky promontories that rise from the blue waters of the Mediterranean. These sheer cliffs are amazing and sometimes shelter small beaches, where people play. The boat trips visit numbers of them, so you see them at close hand. We have taken this trip several times, but it never fails to impress, especially when the sun shines, the sky is blue, the sea is calm and clear. As it was today. Idyllic. (Hard to take a picture that gives an idea of the sheer height of the rocks, but this one has a sense of the scale.)

A lovely, long lunch by the port – fish of course. And then we headed home. Far too hot for anything else. A good ‘away’ day.
