Tubeless Tire Chronicles #3

I had a premonition today as I looked at the bike kit on the table.  It contains an extra tube, tire irons, a miniature pump and a multi-tool.  Nah, the new tubeless tires are reportedly bomb-proof and the kit was just extra weight.  I wanted the bike to look pretty for a few pictures.  I spotted these farm ruins this morning in the car and thought it would make a good picture.

My first flat with a tubeless tire today.  lol

I hit either a really big piece of glass like the bottom of a bottle or sharp metal fragment.  (It was enough to jolt the bike pretty hard.)  I didn't see it in any case.  I kept riding as it wasn't immediately apparent that I had a leak.  No spare tube (forget about patches with a tubeless tire - the only chance is to use a regular inner tube) and no pump and no one to call for a ride.  Funnily enough, somebody recognized me and yelled out my name as they passed by - I think somebody from my previous work 10 years ago, but they didn't stop as I was still riding the bike.  Amazingly I was able to ride it all the way home the remaining 11 km's - slowly and careful about the road.  The tire stayed seated on the bead and kept a minimum of pressure (must have been a few psi left in it).  That was enough to protect the rim and not roll off.  Bad news is the tire is now trash.

Lesson learned, carry a spare tube and pump. :)
