I bought a pile of plates at a market stall in Church Street. I paid R50 for a pile of 9 plates - some of which were a bit chipped and scuffed. I just liked them.
After a bit of research, they're Celadon ware and were manufactured between 1860-1880. Some porcelain from the Qing dynasty was exported to Japan and Europe via the VOC. The VOC was the only trading company at that time that was allowed to trade with Japan, and maybe this is how they got to the Cape.
The plates are valued at about $400 each on the international market.
Best R50 I've ever spent.
