Bus Challenge No 151!
Timsbury, Somerset
After having enjoyed our Wiltshire Winsley Wander last week, my BC friend and I decided to explore another village today, this time the village of Timsbury in Somerset; another village that I’ve driven through many times without having looked beyond the main road.
As successful as last week’s wander was, today’s was as unsuccessful. We were following a 2 mile historic trail around the former mining village, but it was one of those trails that pointed out where things used to be, eg “Here is the doctor’s surgery. There used to be a large Elizabethan mansion house here, but it was demolished in 1961” (or words to that effect). The best part of the walk was the views from the village, over the Somerset countryside.
Before leaving home, I’d checked on the Internet that the village cafe would be open so that we could have lunch out after our walk. Arriving at the cafe, we found a sign saying that the cafe was shut (for today only!) as they’d had a very busy day at a village festival yesterday. Knowing there was a chippie in the village, we thought salty chips would do for lunch instead, except we then discovered that the chippie didn’t open on Mondays! All was not lost though, as there’s a very nice pub in the village. Guess what? When we arrived at the pub there was a sign outside saying it was shut today due to staff illness! So after lunch plans were thwarted for the third time, we bought a bag of custard doughnuts from the village shop and found a bench in the Miners’ Memorial Garden. And the run of bad luck didn’t end there...
Heading back to the bus stop, I wanted to pop into a very nice gift shop we’d passed on our walk, to pick up a birthday present and card. Despite saying open 9am-5pm on the door, the shop was... shut! At this point we gave up on the outing and chalked this one up to experience...
A morning of strange oppressive weather - heavy dark clouds, strong winds, thick muggy air - yet the minute I got home, the cloud lifted and blue skies and warm sunshine appeared. Maybe the weather was trying to tell me something...
Total bus journey time = 38 mins
