At a re-enactment of the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie leads the Jacobite army to fight against the Government army (Extra)
The Battle of Prestonpans took place on 21 September 1745 and was the last of a series of attempts by the Jacobites dating back to 1689 to replace the Hanoverian dynasty on the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. A month beforehand Prince Charles Edward Stuart had arrived from France and raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an attempt to recapture the British throne which he believed rightfully belonged to him. His victory at Prestonpans encouraged him to march south to London but he turned back at Derby and eventually after the Jacobites were heavily defeated at Culloden the following April, the Prince gave up and returned to France.
