It's that time of the year again. You can't go blackberrying without encountering a spider hanging in the still centre of a web.
Recently the idea of 'extended cognition' has advanced the hypothesis that spider webs effectively outsource the central brain by interacting directly with the environment, picking up clues and sending back information which spiders then use to their advantage by constructing webs designed to maximise the potential of their surroundings, rather like the way that our smart phones (if we have them) provide information that may influence our decisions.
